Sleeplord

SLEEPLORD 1969 Sleeplord was a five-piece blues band formed in 1969, built around a simple idea that set them apart from most groups of the era: there was no single lead singer. All five members sang lead. The band's lineup consisted of: • Lena Voss — Vocals / Piano / Organ • Lyle Danner — Lead Guitar / Vocals • Warren Pike — Guitar / Vocals • Jesse Hollan — Bass / Vocals • Cliff Ransom — Drums / Vocals With two guitar players, piano, bass, and drums, Sleeplord developed a full, guitar-driven blues sound. The two guitars could trade riffs, answer each other, or lock together behind whichever member was singing lead. But the band's defining characteristic remained its voices. There was no frontman. No permanent lead singer. Each of the five members took the lead on different songs, giving the albums a changing vocal character from track to track. Lena Voss was a full member of the band and an equal voice within Sleeplord, with her piano playing adding another dimension to the group's sound. Sleeplord's music was rooted in electric blues but carried the spirit of 1969—raw, heavy, soulful, and willing to stretch beyond traditional blues arrangements. Their performances could move from stripped-down blues numbers into extended guitar passages, with the entire band contributing to the sound. The group spent 1969 playing clubs and small venues while writing and recording new material. Their recordings captured a band still developing, experimenting, and finding its sound. The first Sleeplord album represents only one part of that period. There are other recordings, other sessions, and other material connected to the band, meaning more Sleeplord albums may appear as the story continues to unfold. There is no final chapter to the Sleeplord story. The music simply continues. Five members. Five lead voices. Two guitars. One band. Sleeplord.
